Weapons
What you can find in Arizona today, plus the home-made. Old revolvers, lever-action carbines and army trophies of past wars stay as retro. Over a hundred kinds by release. Names and models are fictional, based on real ones, with our own markings on the guns.
Classes
| Class | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Handguns and revolvers | A polymer 9 mm like the police carry, a compact for concealed carry, an old-school .45, a .357 revolver | Easy to hide, quick to draw; the .357 goes through a car door |
| Shotguns | Police pump gun, sawn-off double barrel, semi-auto hunting shotgun | Knock people down, blow out locks and hinges, shred tyres |
| Rifles | A .223 carbine, a scoped hunting rifle, long-range .338 and .50, a lever-action carbine, an army automatic | Range in the desert; rounds go through thin walls and car bodies |
| Submachine guns | A smugglers' compact, a 9 mm pistol-carbine, an army trophy | Shooting from cars, low accuracy |
| Heavy | Light machine gun, grenade and rocket launchers from the army depot | Rare, ammo costs more than food; wrecks cars and walls |
| Explosives | Mine dynamite (fuse, bundle, timer), Molotov cocktail, home-made mine, gas cylinder | Brings down buildings and bridges, starts fires, collapses drifts |
| Melee and improvised | Knife, machete, bat, crowbar, pickaxe, shovel | Quiet and free, but leaves evidence |
| Less-lethal | Stun gun, pepper spray, beanbag rounds, tranquilliser, signal jammer, body armour | Arrests without blood; the jammer cuts off phones, 911 and GPS trackers |
| Vehicle-mounted | Cab-mounted machine gun, pickup flamethrower, ram, harpoon with a cable | Built in the garage over the story |
Ballistics
Bullets are physical: they fly in an arc, lose energy, go through or stop depending on the material. Boards and drywall are shot through, a concrete block holds, a car stops a pistol but not a rifle. Recoil, sound and echo are recorded for every gun and depend on the place: canyon, street, room, mine. Guns get dusty and sometimes jam if not cleaned.
Aiming and cover
Free aim. No aim assist on a mouse; on a gamepad, a gentle pull towards the target that can be turned off. Spread depends on stance, movement, fatigue and a wounded arm. Cover doesn't stick you to walls: you lean on any edge, blind-fire and shoot round corners, climb and vault.
Where to get them and what to carry
Gun shops, pawn shops and gun shows, Cobalt's black market, army depots and trophies. Under today's Arizona law, adults carry openly from 18 and concealed without a permit from 21. You can carry two long guns, a pistol, a knife and explosives; the rest stays in the trunk or a stash.
What a weapon does to the target
The body has about 15 zones. A bullet in the leg makes you limp, in the arm it ruins aim and makes you drop the gun, in the stomach you slowly bleed out. A police vest stops a pistol but not a rifle. Large calibres and buckshot can take a limb off if the hit is strong enough. Gore level is a setting: full, no dismemberment, or no blood. More on wounds in Theft and robbery.
