Towns and places
The county has 28 towns. Two big ones are built to GTA IV detail; the rest are smaller, and each has its own character, its own trouble and its own trade. There are also 14 mines, 18 ranches and a dozen places where machines live.
Kingston City
The main town on Route 66, about 10 km². Route 66, I-40, US-93 and the railroad cross here. Every building can be entered, and every resident has a home, a job and a routine.
| District | What is there | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Route 66, the main street | Neon diners, motels, gas stations, car lots, a drive-in theatre | Chases past shop windows, neon signs falling onto the road |
| Downtown | The courthouse and sheriff's office, the bank, the radio station, the newspaper, bars | Bank robbery, a shootout at the courthouse |
| Railroad district | The Desert & Pacific station, warehouses, the yard, a water tower | The scheduled freight train flattens anything on the tracks |
| Outskirts | Trailer parks, a scrapyard with a crane and crusher, workshops, a biker bar | Chain explosions of gas cylinders, the crane's magnet lifting a car |
| The hills | Homes of the rich and of Cobalt's people, the reservoir | Storming a villa, a burst water main |
The town has a hospital that by law reports every gunshot wound to the sheriff, a barber, a tattoo parlour on Route 66, a bowling alley, a drive-in showing B movies and an arcade bar. Online characters can start at the bus station.
Oatesville
A mining town on a mountain switchback in the Black Mountains: wooden houses over drops, mines full of dynamite, a saloon, bikers and gold. Narrow streets, sharp bends with no guardrails and cave-ins in the drifts. Wild burros walk down the main street and block the road. The shops here sell work and prospecting clothes, and the doctor who asks no questions is the local vet. The second starting town online.
Laughton
A river town on the Nevada bank of the Colorado: casinos, a marina, wedding chapels. The casinos play for in-game money only. Show up in work overalls and people look at you sideways. The third starting town online.
Small towns
A town lives as long as it has work: the roadside one is dying because I-40 took the traffic, the mining one hangs on its mine, the farming one on river water. A town's health changes with what players and Cobalt do: thriving, holding on, dying, abandoned. Take its water and the fields dry up and windows get boarded. Bring it back and you see fresh paint and new signs.
- By the river: Catfish Landing, Riverbend, Mesquite Flat, Moho Valley, Eagles Point, Fort Halsey, Catherine Mine, Saddle Rock
- Route 66 east: Hackland, Valencia Junction, Traxton, Crozet, Altair, Rancho Alto
- Around Kingston City: McConnell, Sand Wash, Cedar Hill, Silver Spur, Golden Flats
- Mountains and north: Chlorite, North Pole, Dowen Springs, Juniper Ridge, Burnt Canyon, High Pines, Yucca Siding
Mines and ranches
14 mines with dirt roads to them: Lucky Seven, Red Horse, Old Baldy, Granite Queen, La Paloma, Widow McRae, Thunderbird and more. Copper, silver, gold and turquoise. Online it means prospecting, filing a claim, mining and hauling ore.
18 ranches live by the seasons: cattle drives, branding, mending fences, fights over wells, rustlers with night trucks and drought that kills the herd. Among them are Maddox, Bar K, Lazy S, Red Mesa, Horseshoe, Coyote Wells and Last Well.
Where the machines live
| Place | Where | What is there |
|---|---|---|
| Airport and boneyard | 6 km northeast of Kingston City | A former military airfield. Flight school, hangars, rows of retired airliners and rusting bombers to strip for parts |
| Smugglers' strip | A dry lake 40 km north | Twin-engine cargo planes; at night the strip is marked with fires |
| Crop dusters' field | River farms, south edge of the map | Crop-dusting biplanes, tractors, irrigation canals |
| Lake Mohave marina | 45 km west | Speedboats, houseboats, jet skis, the sheriff's river patrol |
| Mohave Dam | The Colorado canyon, 45 km west | Whoever holds the dam holds the county's water and power. The most valuable territory online |
| Fort Hualapai | Hualapai foothills, 25 km southeast | A mothballed National Guard base: jeeps, armoured carriers, tanks, helicopters |
| Copper pit | Cerbat Mountains, 25 km northwest | Benches, conveyors, an explosives bunker, haul trucks |
| I-40 construction | Near Kingston City | An unfinished interchange and bridges, an asphalt plant, road machines |
